Commerical and Government Entity (CAGE)

October 12, 2018

Besides a DUNS#,  what is another crucial unique identifier given to a firm in the federal marketplace? The federal government assigns several identifiers to firms when doing business in this sector. One of the most common numbers assigned to your firm besides your DUNS is called Commercial and Government Entity or CAGE. The Defense Logistics Agency assigns a CAGE. According to DLA, a CAGE is a “ five digit alphanumeric identifier” given to all companies or “entities” within the Continental United States.  DLA is the only one allowed to assign these identifiers.  The website for CAGE information is gage.dla.mil, see the below picture. Additionally,  FAR 4.18 provides more explanation in the requirement of having a CAGE. Why does a firm need a CAGE code? Doing business with the federal government requires specific dynamic procurement processes as a starting point. For you, this is one of the starting points besides registering in SAM database. Also, there is a nominal fee for “ registration, assignment and maintenance” of your CAGE by DLA. Contracting officers are required to use certain terms and conditions within a contract that requires firms to hold a CAGE,  which is “Unique Entity Identifier” - FAR 52.204-6 and CAGE Reporting -52.204-16. Finally, If you are doing business with entities other than the federal government for example NATO, they also have similar unique identifiers for your firm, but their code is NCAGE. CAGE is one of many steps required to work in the federal marketplace.
